St. Mary’s, Above Rocks, and Missions in Jamaica

On August 16, the Conventual Franciscans at St. Mary’s, Above Rocks, and Missions in Jamaica celebrated four years of ministry on the island. Brother Michael Duffy, Friar Michael Heine, and Friar Brad Heckathorne honored the occasion by going on an Assumption pilgrimage to St. Thomas Civil Parish.

Undertaking a pilgrimage during the summer in Jamaica is not always possible. July and August fall during the hurricane season. The Franciscans were able to attend the Assumption pilgrimage in 2006; during the following two years a hurricane and a tropical depression made the journey impossible.

A strong focus on the development of faith at the mission

Life in Jamaica can be hard. But the Franciscan brothers and sisters who are there work in the knowledge that they are improving the physical and spiritual lives of that nation's people. Awareness of this purpose along with a deep faith in God and the example of Francis of Assisi give them the strength to affect positive change every day.
