Friar Gerry Waterman, OFM Conv. is the Catholic Campus Minister at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina. His work at the university brings him in contact with young men and women who want to deepen their faith and become members of a community.

At the beginning of the most recent university year, Friar Gerry led the annual Beach Retreat for 40 men and women who belong to the Catholic Campus Ministry at Elon. The retreat took place on North Carolina’s Oak Island and was based around the theme of “Being a Warrior for Christ”.

The retreat attendees participated in a multitude of activities that helped them relax and get to know one another.  One attendee – Meg Taylor - commented that Friar Gerry celebrating Mass on the beach early one morning was very meaningful to her. She concluded that the retreat brought the 40 members of the Catholic Campus Ministry closer to one another and to God.
