Working to Create Equality Through Education

The Arts in Assisi Project supports seventh and eighth graders

from the Northside of Syracuse, New York in their pursuit towards a college education

Researchers have proven that statistically a college education improves one's quality of life. Individuals with a college degree tend to have a wider set of opportunities open to them. Dedication and willingness are, of course, necessary for success as well. Yet many intelligent, hard working young people never have the chance to attend college and graduate with a degree. Their socioeconomic situation prevents them from reaching their fullest potential.

Members of the Franciscan Collaborative Ministries (FCM) in Syracuse, New York were not about to sit idly by as creative minds were going untapped. With financial help from GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), FCM administrative staff members Dominic Robinson and Maarten Jackobs set up the Arts in Assisi Project with the aim of helping underprivileged kids from the Northside of Syracuse - the FCM's turf - earn a degree. Arts in Assisi supports 50 seventh and eighth graders with summer activities and after school meetings that prepare them for a successful college or university career. Naturally, the children's parents or guardians form their base of support, encouraging their offspring to aim far and aim high.

Franciscans deeply believe in equality. A lack of education due to socioeconomic disadvantages is a major example of inequality in North America. Arts in Assisi is breaking this inequality in its own community and thus shifting many lives towards a better future. Child by child, the program works to make the United States a better place to live.
