The Feast of Assumption in Carey, Ohio

An Our Lady of Consolation Procession at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio.

The feast of Mary’s Assumption is a major celebration at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio. Celebrated with a novena over several days, the feast attracts pilgrims who stay in tents and recreational vehicles near the shrine. One major highlight of the Feast of Assumption pilgrimage is the Our Lady of Consolation Procession. This year, the procession took place in the evening with the glow of burning candles lighting the pilgrims’ faces.

Conventual Franciscan Friars – who have been at the shrine for nearly a century – serve the pilgrims during the Feast of Assumption pilgrimage. This year 36 friars ministered to the faithful. Many of the faithful were recent Iraqi immigrants and Chaldean Christians. The friars amongst other duties offered blessings, heard confessions, and celebrated Masses. The novice friars also made sure to visit the pilgrims at their campsites where everyone involved enjoyed the fraternity.
