Franciscans in Libertyville, Illinois Foster Dialogue through Breakfast Series

St. Francis of Assisi speaking with the Sultan of Egypt Melek el-Kamel
The Franciscans have always believed in the power of dialogue. The most prominent example of Franciscan dialogue is of course Francis of Assisi speaking with the Sultan of Egypt Melek el-Kamel, in 1219.

At the Conventual Franciscan-run Marytown Retreat and Conference Center in Libertyville, Illinois (a property that also includes the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe), the Franciscan tradition of dialogue continues today in the format of the Business Breakfast Series.

Judge Barbara Gilleran Johnson will speak at the Business Breakfast Series
about the"Threats to Catholic Values in Today's Judicial System"
Held on the first Friday of every month – November 2009 notwithstanding - the series invites Catholic leaders from various sectors – including government, healthcare, media, and business – to speak on topics important to all Catholics. After the speaker’s presentation, participants at the breakfast then have a chance to engage in dialogue with the speaker and one another.
To be Franciscan is also to affect positive change in the world. Change can only happen if one is informed about any given situation. The Breakfast Series in Libertyville fulfills this purpose as well. Participants leave each of the series events more empowered to tackle the world’s many different problems.
