Turning to Brooklyn's Trinity Human Service Center in One's Time of Need

The Trinity Human Service Center in Brooklyn, New York

Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church sits on Montrose Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. It is a magnificent structure and has been an integral part of Brooklyn since 1841. Right behind the church on Johnson Avenue is the Trinity Human Service Center, which was founded by the parish in 1979 to serve the residents of Brooklyn’s Greenpoint, Bushwick, and Williamsburg neighborhoods.

The creation of the Trinity Human Service Center at the end of the 1970s resulted from the economic malaise and many social problems that New York was facing at the time. A few years after the creation of the center, the Conventual Franciscan Friars took over the running of Most Holy Trinity parish. Their Franciscan charism of service towards others went hand in hand with the mission of the Trinity Human Service Center. Friar Francis Lombardo – the first Conventual Franciscan pastor of Most Holy Trinity – and his fellow friars approached their new community by going into it and finding how they could help their fellow brothers and sisters improve their lives.

Friar Santo Cricchio - the current pastor of Most Holy Trinity –– continues the tradition of service to the community; and even though more than 30 years have passed since the founding of the Trinity Human Service Center, the center keeps as busy as ever assisting anyone in need.

Volunteers (with the organizational help of the Dominican Sisters) are the mainstay of the Trinity Human Service Center. In the last year alone, they offered more than 80,000 meals to hungry persons and assisted 12,000 individuals with a variety of problems. The center essentially exists to help the vulnerable in any way possible. Persons in need of food or clothing can go through the center’s doors and have this most basic necessity relieved. Other anxious souls who might be looking for help in processing their immigration status cases, healthcare, or English language lessons will also find help at the Trinity Human Service Center.
