Franciscans Help Floridians Overcome One of Life's Challenges

Friar Mark A. Szanyi

St. Lucie Parish in Port St. Lucie, Florida wants to help struggling parishioners lose weight and become healthy by starting the Light Weigh Program. Participants of the program read the Bible, pray, and learn how to resist tempting foods. Over time they develop a sense of moderation towards eating.

Friar Michael Englert

It is common knowledge that many countries in the western world are suffering from obesity. The reasons for this phenomenon are numerous.  Many people are rushed; they have no time to cook proper meals and thus make unhealthy eating choices. And it is very convenient to purchase foods like French fries and hamburgers from local fast food outlets.

Friar Vincent Rubino

Franciscans like Friar Mark A. Szanyi – who is pastor of St. Lucie - understand the complexities of life because over the course of their own lives they fulfill a variety of ministries and deal with many different people. Friar Mark, for example, might be pastor of St. Lucie but he has also worked as a teacher and assistant principal of a school. Friar Michael Englert – St. Lucie’s parochial vicar – has lived in Costa Rica and Honduras. Friar Vincent Rubino – another parochial vicar at St. Lucie – studied physics at university and served the Spanish-speaking population of Brooklyn, New York. All these men understand that life sometimes can be challenging. Through their ministries they help people overcome such challenges no matter what their nature might be.
