Conventual Parish in Baltimore Supports Men in Transition

Friar Dennis Grumsey is Pastor of St. Casimir Parish in Baltimore

As America’s economy continues to struggle, many people find themselves unable to pay for the basic necessities of life like food and shelter. In large cities across the country, populations of homeless persons have grown. In the city of Baltimore, the Catholic community has established the Christopher Place Employment Academy, which that city’s Conventual Franciscan-run St. Casimir Parish supports.

The Christopher Place Employment Academy assists homeless men who want to transition into a life of more stability with employment and shelter. It does this first by providing the men with a bed in a safe environment. Next residents at the Academy take courses that prepare them for reentry into the job market and permanent housing. Whether they need to craft a resume, develop social skills, improve their basic education levels, or deal with substance abuse, residents can access such services at the Christopher Place Employment Academy.

The community at the Conventual Franciscan-run St. Casimir Parish is aware of Baltimore’s economic situation. This month members of the community will come together at the Kolbe Center Kitchen to cook for the Christopher Place Employment Academy. Without sustenance, people are unable to function and care for themselves. The men of the Christopher Place Employment Academy will with the help of St. Casimir Parish be able to better deal with the many challenges ahead.
