Conventual Franciscan friars at Archbishop Curley High School's 50th anniversary celebration

A number of Conventual Franciscan friars attended Baltimore’s Archbishop Curley High School’s 50th Anniversary Banquet this month at the Sheraton Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. The friars’ presence at the banquet underlined their half-century commitment to the school.

During the banquet, attendees mingled with one another and watched a video on the history of Curley. Friar Joe Benicewicz, OFM Conv. – president of the school – offered welcoming remarks to everyone present. Former presidents who happen to also be Conventual friars were in the audience. They included Gregory Hartmayer, Robert Twele, Donald Grzymski, and Michael Martin.

Named after Archbishop Michael J. Curley of Baltimore, that city’s Archbishop Curley High School was the first Archdiocesan School to educate young men. Archbishop Francis P. Keough had been the driving force behind the school’s creation. The Conventual Franciscan friars came on board as administrators of as well as educators at Archbishop Curley High School with the very first class of students.
