Discerning in Costa Rica

Contact with the Franciscans is an important first step in one's vocation
with the Order of Friars Minor Conventual
Friar Jude Winkler - a renowned homilist who travels the world preaching - has said that we humans have to get used to the idea of certain things happening on God's time. This includes discerning one's vocation. Each vocation story is unique of course, but oftentimes figuring out God's plan for our lives takes time. In Alajuela, Costa Rica on a recent Saturday, six discerning men attended a vocation gathering at that city's Conventual Franciscan friary. Friars Jorge Dobles and Marco Umaña hosted the gathering.

The six young men at the gathering had begun their conversations on their vocations with the friars some time ago. The recent gathering was simply a step in the process of discernment. It will continue with monthly meetings during which the men plan on starting the application process to the Conventual Franciscans' postulancy program. Then men will begin this program on January 3, 2010.
