FrancisCorps Ten Years On

The 2008-09 FrancisCorps cohort
As the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun. In the case of FrancisCorps – a volunteer program run by the Conventual Franciscans – it has already been a decade since its inception. Time flies, indeed.
Headed by Brother Jim Moore at its Syracuse, New York headquarters, FrancisCorps takes on recent college graduates and for one year places them in various volunteer positions around Syracuse and the Central American nation of Costa Rica. In their volunteer positions, the young graduates meet fascinating people, develop their faith, and also learn the true meaning of Franciscan service.

Training session in New Jersey
This year, ten young people in the 22 to 23 age range have signed up with FrancisCorps. Having recently completed their training in Syracuse and on the Jersey Shore, they will be starting their positions soon. Six of the young volunteers will work in Syracuse while the rest will spend their time in Costa Rica. Some of their positions include working at a school for blind, deaf, and physically impaired children; mentoring young people; assisting at a food pantry; and comforting the chronically ill.
