Conventual Friars Keep Busy Serving Communities in Southern Mexico

Conventual Franciscan Friars in Southern Mexico stoke the faith of the communities around them
Conventual Franciscan Friar John Calgaro comes from his Order’s St. Bonaventure Province in the United States. The province covers large areas of the country’s Midwest including Chicago, Illinois.
Friar John’s day-to-day ministry has taken him far from the avenues and skyscrapers of Chicago. Most of the time Friar John can be found at the Conventual Franciscan mission in Xochistlahuaca – a municipality in southern Mexico, just east of Acapulco. Friar John keeps very busy with his mission work. Only several months ago he assisted the Archbishop of Acapulco in the confirmation of 506 young men and women.
Friars from St. Bonaventure Province actually founded the mission in Mexico in 1979. Today, the mission is staffed largely by friars from the Mexican Custody as well as two friars from the United States. These men at the Mexican mission live simply in the way of St. Francis. They serve the local communities as best they can and evangelize to them too.
