Friar Greg Spuhler at All Saints Academy Elementary School
Not long ago, Friar Greg Spuhler dropped by the All Saints Academy Elementary School in Albany, New York. Friar Greg actually lives in Albany too. He is the director of the Center City Parish Social Ministry at Holy Family Parish. Friar Greg’s ministry requires him to face many of the injustices that our fellow human beings have to deal with on a daily basis. These suffering human beings are quite often people we pass on the street day after day.

Friar Greg’s visit to All Saints Academy Elementary School was related to his ministry. Friar Greg wanted to share with the school’s eighth graders a little bit about poverty. Most of us after all have a natural instinct to protect our children from the injustices of this world; and rightly so. Friar Greg’s talk with All Saints’ eight graders had at its core a sense of social awareness. These young people will in several years enter adulthood with which comes greater responsibility to change the world for the better. Creating awareness of the world as it is will encourage these young 13 and 14 year olds not to sit passively by, but to take action. Already after Friar Greg’s visit the class began to stir about the possibility of assisting at a local soup kitchen in the not too distant future.
