Good Friday in North Carolina

The live re-creation of the Ways of the Cross at St. Julia's Parish in Siler City, North Carolina

On Good Friday, the residents of Burlington and Siler City, North Carolina who happened to be passing by Blessed Sacrament Parish (in Burlington) or St. Julia's Church (in Siler City) noticed that something was going on. Crowds had gathered outside of these churches and many persons in their midst wore costumes from another time. Upon closer inspection, the residents passing by might have placed the ornate helmets and capes to the Roman Empire of the 1st century.

Siler City

Both Blessed Sacrament and St. Julia's are Conventual Franciscan-run parishes. The friars who staff these parishes – including Pastors Bob Benko in Burlington and James Fukes in Siler City – try to live the way their founder – Francis of Assisi – did. Francis spent his life imitating Christ. It is no wonder then that the passersby outside of Blessed Sacrament Parish and St. Julia's saw live re-creations of the Stations of the Cross.

The weather on Good Friday all over North Carolina was perfectly suited for outside events. The sun shone and the sky was an blue. Actors involved in the re-creations took their roles very seriously. They were remembering what Jesus went through so that each and every one of us could be saved.
