The Installation of the Most Reverend William P. Callahan as Bishop of La Crosse

of Bishop William P. Callahan
Earlier this month, Conventual Franciscans and the people of La Crosse, Wisconsin celebrated the installation of that city’s tenth bishop, the Most Reverend William P. Callahan, who is also a Conventual Franciscan friar.
The installation took place on August 11 – the feast day of St. Clare of Assisi. The evening before, Bishop Callahan spent in silent prayer at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel inside St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral – where the next day Archbishop Jerome Listecki would install him Bishop of La Crosse. Many Conventual friars and supportive members of the public were in the cathedral that evening singing vespers.

The next day everyone gathered for Bishop Callahan’s installation was in an ebullient mood. As has been mentioned Archbishop Jerome Listecki installed Bishop Callahan to the position of Bishop of La Crosse. Archbishop Listecki had once filled this ministry himself. Monsignor Jean-Francois Lantheaume also attended Bishop Callahan’s installation. As counselor to the Apostolic Nunciature, he read Pope Benedict XVI’s letter that announced the appointment of the Most Reverend William P. Callahan to the position of Bishop of La Crosse. After Monsignor Jean-Francois Lantheaume finished the letter, guests in the Cathedral broke into applause.
