Making Candy

Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin, Pennsylvania
Life is a precious gift given to us by God. We must make the best out of this gift by creating positive change. When many people think of making a difference in the world, images of missionary work in far off lands might come to their minds. Work in homeless shelters where a person might help vulnerable individuals get food, a place to rest, and clothing to keep warm is another possibility of how one can change the world for the better. We must not think however that only these large gestures help to improve our surroundings.
Take Mother Cabrini Parish in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Earlier this year, the church (which is staffed by Conventual Franciscans) ran its Candy Easter Egg Making Project. Volunteers got together at the church hall where they had the delicious task of whipping up sweet filling and coating – the two components that were eventually combined to make the candy eggs. Later they were packaged and sold on weekends.

Inside the church
When a parishioners gave money for the candy eggs, they supported the upkeep of their faith community and encouraged the volunteers who made the eggs. The volunteers buoyed by positive emotions surely felt rewarded and empowered. Empowered people face challenges with more energy. The fact alone that they are empowered is already an improvement in the world. We must remember that that with empowerment comes hope and action.
