Honouring Our Parents

(From left to right) Friar George Sabol, Friar James McCurry, Mrs. Helen Sabol, and Friar Justin Biase

Mrs. Helen Sabol is the oldest parent of a friar in the Conventual Franciscan Immaculate Conception Province, which covers vast areas of the United States East Coast along with Canada, Costa Rica, and Brazil. She is 95 years old and the mother of Friar George Sabol. To honour Mrs. Sabol’s achievement of being the oldest parent of a friar, the Ministers Provincial of Immaculate Conception Province and Saint Anthony Province – Friars Justin Biase and James McCurry respectively – as well as Friar George and his sister and brother-in-law visited the lady at the end of July. During the visit the Ministers Provincial presented Mrs. Sabol with a Memorial Walking Stick – a tribute to her position as oldest parent.

A kind and welcoming lady, Mrs. Sabol chatted amiably with her guests. She also had a chance to speak Polish with Friar James and did so by exchanging with him recipes for Polish dishes. Mrs. Sabol might not be able to move about as much as she used to, but her spirit is strong.
