A Peace Shrine in Syracuse, New York

Prayer at the peace shrine

Outside of the Conventual Franciscan Friary in Syracuse, New York stands a peace shrine. A very recent addition to the property, the shrine commemorates Syracuse’s victims of violent death. The Franciscan Friars along with other members of the community have been visiting locations of violent death in Syracuse for the last five years. The peace shrine is a more permanent manifestation of the fact that local people are praying for those whose lives ended suddenly and without expectation.

Brother Ed Falsey is co-director

of the Franciscan Cooperative Ministries

Prayer and action is what Franciscans do. Prayer is a balm from God against the pain of this world. When experienced in a communal setting, prayer provides strength and hope. It also gives courage, which leads to action. In Syracuse, this action happens through the Franciscan Collaborative Ministries. Franciscan Friars and Sisters along with lay people run various organizations ranging from a food pantry to a health clinic and from a legal assistance program to a peace camp for young children. Taken together these programs revitalize the community, giving its various members a sense of working together for a better future.
