St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church – in Pismo Beach, California - is a Conventual Franciscan parish. Friar Victor Abegg – the pastor of St. Paul the Apostle – along with the rest of the friars at the parish work hard to approach life in a Franciscan way.

It was no surprise then that on the Sunday Mass before Thanksgiving, they held a second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The program – initiated by the Bishops of the United States long ago – uses the collected funds to develop impoverished areas in the United States. Its purpose is to give back hope to people who may not have it. The money for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development sparks local economies, which create jobs. Employment improves neighbourhoods. The pattern of positive effects is obvious and the action itself very Franciscan. After all, when Francis of Assisi began to change his life from living for himself to serving God, one of the first things that he did was to embrace and help other people.
