Faith Calls for Reflection

To better live our faith we must reflect on it

Holy Family Parish in Albany, New York encourages parishioners not only to practice their faith but also to spend time on reflection. The parish's pastor - Friar Tony Kall - and several other members of its staff are Conventual Franciscans, men who come from a long tradition of prayer and reflection. Reflection on our faith-life is necessary because we must live our faith fully aware. During a recent week, in the Holy Family bulletin two reflection-inducing questions two for adults and another for children appeared under the title Question of the Week. The questions for adults asked the following: "What do I possess that is absorbing too much of my time and energy? How can I live more simply?" The question intended for the youngest members of the parish asked them to think about how they can share with others. The above questions address life issues. And at first they might not appear to mesh with faith, but our faith and our life are not really two separate things. Franciscans often talk about showing faith through action. Thus if we change our lives for the better our faith will strengthen and we will move closer to Christ.
