Secular Franciscan Youth Meet in Costa Rica

Young men and women from across Latin America got to know

one another at the Franciscans' friary in Alajuela, Costa Rica

At the beginning of the New Year, 90 young men and women – all members of the Secular Franciscan Youth movement – gathered at the Franciscans’ Pastoral Center in Alajuela, Costa Rica. These men and women hailed from Mexico and every country in Central America. Together in one place they exchanged stories about experiences in various ministries, prayed together, and enjoyed one another’s company.

At the Secular Franciscan Youth gathering, participants learned from one another's experiences

Friar Fernando Quiros is the guardian at the Franciscans’ Alajuela friary. His Order arrived in Costa Rica in 1946. It focused on serving people in a variety of ways. The Franciscan friars in Costa Rica, for example, founded St. Francis College in the city of Moravia, which they continue to support today. They also have helped and continue to help the Costa Rican population with its spiritual needs. Hosting members of the Secular Franciscan Youth movement from across Central America and Mexico was yet another way how the friars were able to assist young people to develop their spirituality as well as their understanding of St. Francis of Assisi.
