Taking Care of St. Thomas of Aquinas Cathedral

Refurbishment of the St. Thomas of Aquinas Cathedral

in Reno, Nevada

On a weekend at the end of November, St. Thomas of Aquinas Cathedral – a church staffed by Conventual Franciscan Friars – in Reno, Nevada held an arts and crafts fair. Artisans from the parish sold imaginative pieces and local bakers sold delicious treats. The funds from the fair will at least in part support the cathedral building, which is a century old and recently underwent major structural work.

The structural work on the St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral – an aesthetically magnificent building - took place in 2008. It encompassed the entire church. Contractors installed new electrical boxes and lights. They secured floors and put in brand new drywall. The cathedral’s rector – Friar Thomas Czeck – said that certain rafters in the bell tower still had the charred markings from a fire that scoured through the church building in 1909, the same year that the church opened.
