Conventual Franciscan Pastor Stands up for Education

Friar Ray Mallett

Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Hermosa Beach, California has a close relationship with the Conventual Franciscan Our Lady of Guadalupe (OLG) Parish, which is on the same street as the school. Friar Ray Mallett is pastor of OLG Parish. He takes a close interest in making sure that the school maintains a high level of education and an environment that is conducive to learning.

In a recent note to his fellow parishioners Friar Ray pointed out that students at OLG School are very lucky to have so many experienced teachers. The pupil to teacher ratio at OLG is also a very admirable 1 to 20; this type of ratio ensures that students fully benefit from their teachers’ knowledge. Not wanting to rest on the school’s laurels, Friar Ray wrote in his recent note that OLG School students wrote the Iowa Tests for Basic Skills this autmn. In the past OLG students have scored on these tests one or two years beyond their grade level. Friar Ray wants to see where the students stand currently.

Our Lady of Gudalupe School in Hermosa Beach is one of a number of schools across North America that the Conventual Franciscan friars are associated with. Other schools are located in amongst other places Baltimore and San Jose, Costa Rica. They produce confident educated young people who use their God-given gifts to improve the world they live in.
