Franciscan Friar Meets with Torontonians to Talk About Vocations

Friar Eric de la Pena’s home friary is in Syracuse, New York. As vocation director for the Franciscan friars’ Immaculate Conception Province, Friar Eric however travels across Canada and the United States. He meets with men who feel that God is calling them to the Order of Friars Minor Conventual and talks to people about vocations in general.
Several months ago Friar Eric visited the Franciscan Church of St. Bonaventure and the neighboring St. Bonaventure School in Toronto, Ontario to encourage parishioners and students to explore their vocations. He preached at Masses in the church and spoke to students in various classes about the meaning of the word vocation and how people can discover what God is calling them to do.
Students responded to Friar Eric’s vocation talks enthusiastically. They asked questions about discernment and what life as a friar is like. Touching on various areas of interest they wanted to know amongst other things where friars work and how they support themselves. Friar Eric chatted with students from most classes over a period of two days. At the end one could not help but draw the conclusion that faith really matters to our young men and women.
