Talking with the People of Jamaica

Franciscan friars and sisters
The various ministries that the Conventual Franciscans and the Franciscan sisters fulfill at St. Mary’s, Above Rocks, and Missions in Jamaica empower the souls and minds of countless Jamaicans. These ministries also have the purpose of maintaining human dignity. The Franciscans – both the friars and the sisters – fervently believe in maintaining human dignity and defending the rights of all people.

Talking with the people of Jamaica
Periodically the United Nations conducts a human rights review in Jamaica. This year Franciscans International – the Franciscan organization at the UN – has asked the Franciscan friars and sisters in Jamaica to begin speaking with the Jamaicans they encounter on a daily basis about the various issues they are facing in their lives.
Due to the Franciscans’ close relationships with their Jamaican brothers and sisters; they have been able to discover many issues with which the nation of Jamaica is currently dealing. Poverty, healthcare, education, and child care were only a few of the worries that Franciscans discovered are weighing down the minds of many Jamaicans.
The United Nations headquarters in New York City
Stories that the friars and sisters have collected and those that they will still collect are to be sent to the United Nations headquarters in New York City. The friars and sisters in Jamaica will meanwhile continue serving people in need as they have been doing for a long time.
