Vocations Over Coffee

Albany, New York

The Muddy Cup Coffee House on Madison Avenue in Albany, New York is a very hip place for young people to hang out. It has open mic evenings and hosts many different local bands. Recently it also held a vocations coffee hour. Friars Ken Lucas and Stephen Merrigan spoke with individuals who were keen to understand their vocations in life. And although it is unlikely that in one hour serious life issues were resolved, one can safely say that all the people who spoke with the two friars left strengthened and sure that after a time of discernment they would come to understand their vocation.

Life inside the Muddy Cup Coffee House

Although talking about vocations in a café might at first seem unorthodox, the idea is actually a very good one. Why should the topic of one’s relationship with God or for that matter even conversations on religion be confined to clerical environments? A mature conversation on one’s beliefs can take place anywhere. Our faith is after all a huge part of who we are.
