Parish in Pismo Beach Raises Funds for World Youth Day Pilgrimage

Hundreds of thousands of young people from around the world will attend World Youth Day in Madrid

With World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid fast approaching – the event takes place in August – St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Pismo Beach, California is itself busily raising funds to send some of its young people to Spain for this festive occasion.

Pope Benedict XVI will celebrate World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid with all the pilgrims

The fundraising effort is centered on a recycling drive. Parishioners can bring bottles and cans to the parish and drop them into the recycling bin near the parish hall. This method of raising funds – with a focus on protecting the environment - is very Franciscan.  St. Francis of Assisi advocated care of creation. His brothers – four of whom including the pastor Victor Abegg work at St. Paul the Apostle – continue this tradition.
