During Holy Week the story of our faith unfolds before us as we commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus. Many cultures have special traditions during Holy Week. In some Central and Eastern European countries, for example, the faithful prepare Easter baskets on Holy Saturday and get them blessed in their parishes. St. Peter’s Church, a Conventual Franciscan parish in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey continues this ancient tradition as well.

Blessing of the Easter baskets
Easter baskets can be filled with any type of food. There are, however, some traditional items that signify the story of Holy Week. Hard boiled eggs dyed in a variety of colors remind us of life and rebirth. A piece of bread represents Christ – “the Bread of life”. Some baskets also include vinegar and wine, the former a reminder of the gall given to the crucified Jesus on a sponge and the latter a representation of His precious blood.

The Last Supper
Whatever traditions we might have during Easter, it is most important that they reflect our faith by making it come alive. Jesus Christ loved us so much that he was willing to sacrifice himself in order to save us. That fact we can never forget.
