Vocation Day at Cardinal Hickey Academy in Owings Mills, Maryland
Owings Mills, Maryland is a northern suburb of Baltimore. Like many suburbs across the vast North American continent, it has countless shopping malls and glass-covered business towers. Many of the unincorporated town’s residents drive into Baltimore for work every weekday.

When it comes to education, Owings Mills is blessed with Cardinal Hickey Academy, a Catholic elementary school run by the Nashville Dominican Sisters. Not too long ago, the sisters wanted to introduce their pupils to the idea of religious vocation. Most Catholic parents never bring this topic up with their children. Religious vocation can be a touchy subject but it is likely also one that rarely crosses a parent’s mind.

The introduction to religious vocations at Cardinal Hickey Academy took the form of storytelling. Friar Brad Milunski and four other religious shared their vocation stories with three shifts of students.
Faith and a desire to serve God are often difficult define. They are both spiritual experiences. However, by telling the stories around these spiritual experiences, a religious actually creates greater understanding of his or her vocation without necessarily defining why it is there in the first place. Thus, the young students at Cardinal Hickey Academy heard engaging stories about key moments in the lives of the four religious who sat in front of them. One can hope that these stories will inspire the students to search for God within themselves so that one day in the future they might have vocation stories of their own.
